Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet or air fryer
  • Tongs
  • Measuring spoons
  • Whisk or fork

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs chicken drumsticks or wings
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce optional, for serving
  • Ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping, optional

Instructions

Preheat and Prepare

  • I preheat my oven to 400°F (200°C) or set my air fryer to 375°F. While it’s heating, I line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup.

Marinate the Chicken

  • In a large mixing bowl, I whisk together olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. I toss the chicken in the mixture, ensuring every piece is coated evenly.

Arrange and Cook

  • I place the chicken pieces on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each piece for proper cooking. For air fryer users, I arrange the pieces in a single layer in the basket.

Bake or Air Fry

  • For the oven, I bake the chicken for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even browning. If using an air fryer, I cook for 18-22 minutes, flipping once. I check for doneness using a meat thermometer; the internal temperature should reach 165°F.

Serve

  • I serve the chicken hot with barbecue sauce or my favorite dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

This Game Day Chicken Recipe is incredibly versatile. If you prefer a spicier kick, you can add a few extra dashes of hot sauce to the glaze.
You can also make the glaze ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to a week, making this recipe even easier when the big game day comes around.
If you’re looking for a lower-carb version, you can skip the honey or opt for a sugar-free substitute. For a more hearty meal, pair the chicken with roasted potatoes or a fresh side salad.
